  13. enhanced serial ports (on most Power Macintosh and Macintosh "AV class" 
  14. computers) to boost your serial port speed.

  35. ･    A Power Macintosh or "AV" Macintosh (i.e. Quadra AV, Centris AV)

  37. SerialSpeed 230 is known to work on these models:

  39. Macintosh Quadra 660av, 840av
  40. Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 7200, 7500, 7600, 8100, 8500, 9500
  41. Power Computing model 100

  45. ･    A serial device that can operate at 115Kbps or 230Kbps, for example
  46.      a V.34 or V.FC modem. (Note: most V.32 bis modems will not work.)
  47.  
  48. ･    Application software that is normally used at the speed of 57.6Kbps
  49.  
  50. The first step:
  51.  
  52. Let's say you have a telecommunications program like MicroPhone Proｪ 
  53. and a V.34 modem. First you need to set everything up so it works properly at 
  54. 57.6Kbps. This means using the proper hardware handshaking serial cable, 
  55. setting hardware handshake mode on your modem and in your 
  56. communications program, setting 57.6Kbps port speed, etc.

  58. Instructions on how to do this will vary depending on what kind of modem 
  59. and application software you are using. I recommend that you set up your 
  60. modem so that it will give the most detailed status reports (i.e. not only 
  61. report CARRIER 28800, but also CONNECT 57600 and COMPRESSION V.42, 
  62. etc.)  Consult your modem manual for details. Once you have your modem 
  63. working at 57.6Kbps, it's time to install SerialSpeed 230 and get turbocharged!

  137. The control panel gives you the opportunity to set which ports will be 
  138. accelerated, and to what speed. You have several choices for each port:
  139.  
  140. ･ No change to the port speeds
  141. ･ Set all port speeds to 230,000 BPS or 115,000 BPS
  142. ･ Leave some port speeds unchanged, and set other port speeds to 230,000 BPS or 115,000BPS
  143. (your choice of speeds from the popup menu)
  144.  
  145. The default settings are:
  146.  
  147. ･    Modem port:     Set all port speeds to 230,000 BPS
  148. ･    Printer port:      No change
  149.  
  150. We suggest you leave the default settings as-is for the time being, but note:
  151.  
  152. Ssome V.34 modems do not support 230Kbps operation;  If your modem does not 
  153. support 230Kbps, you must set the modem port to 115Kbps.
  154.  
  155. Examples of modems that don't support 230Kbps: SupraFAXModem 288, Global Village Platinum.

  157. Once you have chosen the appropriate settings for your system, close the 
  158. control panel and restart your computer.

  160. Starting up with SerialSpeed 230

  162. SerialSpeed 230 checks during startup to make sure your computer can 
  163. support its capabilities.

  175. You can prevent SerialSpeed 230 from loading by holding down the  Shift key 
  176. during startup. SerialSpeed will display the "X" icon to indicate it did not 
  177. load.

  182. Once the Finder has loaded, you may see one of several dialog boxes.
  183.  
  184. The first one is normal during the trial period, it indicates that you have not 
  185. registered the product.

  202. The second dialog indicates that your system cannot support SerialSpeed 230.

  218. SerialSpeed 230 requires a special "DMA" serial driver in order to 
  219. operate. This type of serial driver works faster and with less demand on the 
  220. Macintosh CPU than the older, interrupt driven serial ports. Unfortunately, the 
  221. DMA serial driver is only available on Power Macintosh and "AV" 
  222. Macintoshes. Not all Power Macintoshes can use the DMA serial driver. See the 
  223. Compatibility Notes / FAQ for a list of Macs that are known to work with 
  224. SerialSpeed 230.

  226. If you get this dialog, and you donﾕt have one of the Macintosh models that 
  227. are known to work, SerialSpeed will not work for you. Remove SerialSpeed 
  228. 230 from your system by dragging the Control Panel to the trash can. Sorry!

  230. The third dialog indicates that SerialSpeed was not able to open the serial port 
  231. during startup.

  246. This is a common problem for users who have fax software installed If you 
  247. see this dialog, you can solve the problem by following the above steps.

  250. Using SerialSpeed 230
  251.  
  252. SerialSpeed 230 is activated automatically on whichever serial ports you 
  253. enabled in the Control Panel. Whenever an application opens the "enabled" 
  254. serial port at the appropriate speed,  SerialSpeed 230 kicks in and boosts the
  255. port speed to 230,000 BPS or 115,000 BPS! This means you can configure any application 
  256. for 57.6Kbps and use it as you normally would, but 2 or 4 times faster.

  258. Configure your applications for the highest speed
  259.  
  260. If you've had a high speed modem for awhile, you've probably done this 
  261. already. It's important that you set each application to communicate at 
  262. the highest possible port speed (recommended: 57.6Kbps).  The SerialSpeed 230 
  263. control panel should be set to boost the corresponding port speed to 
  264. 230,000 BPS or 115,000 BPS (it is configured this way by default).

  266. How to get the highest performance
  267.  
  268. SerialSpeed 230 boosts the speed of the connection between the Macintosh 
  269. and your serial device (i.e. modem.) This is called the "DTE" rate, as opposed
  270. to the "DCE" rate (modem-to-modem speed). It does not boost the speed of your serial 
  271. device or your application program. It is critically important to make sure 
  272. these other components are operating at peak performance. Here are some 
  273. tips:
  274.  
  275. Make sure data compression is enabled on your modem. If your modem is 
  276. not sending compressed data, itﾕs sending at its basic rate of 14.4Kbps or 
  277. 28.8Kbps and you wonﾕt see any speed improvement. Most V.34 modems will 
  278. transmit compressed data to your computer at 115Kbps, and some V.34 
  279. modems (i.e. Hayes Optima, USRobotics Sportster) will transmit compressed 
  280. data at a full 230Kbps!
  281.  
  282. We suggest installing System 7.5.3 or SerialDMA 2.0.2 on your computer. 
  283. SerialDMA 2.0.2 is a completely rewritten serial driver that works on
  284. any Macintosh with the DMA serial ports (Power Macintosh or Quadra
  285. AV models.) It provides much improved performance and compatibility.
  286. It's built into System 7.5.3 or greater, so if you have those system versions,
  287. you don't need SerialDMA 2.0.2.
  288.  
  289. SerialDMA 2.0.2 is available from Appleﾕs FTP site (ftp.apple.com) as part 
  290. of the System 7.5.2 Printing Update 1.1. 
  291.  
  292. In addition, Brookline Software has licensed SerialDMA for distribution on 
  293. diskette and CD-ROM only; registered SerialSpeed 230 customers can get a 
  294. diskette copy of SerialSpeed 230 including SerialDMA 2.0.2 for a nominal fee.

  297. Use efficient file transfer programs like ZMODEM. These will transmit larger, 
  298. more compressible chunks of data and allow your modem to operate at a 
  299. higher speed. Older protocols like Kermit and XMODEM send small chunks 
  300. of data and performance suffers as a result. 
  301.  
  302. Make sure the computer on the other end is sending data at rates of 115Kbps 
  303. or 230Kbps. Even if the remote system has a V.34 modem, this is no guarantee 
  304. that it is sending data faster than 57.6Kbps. Most IBM PC based systems can 
  305. send you data at 115Kbps or 230Kbps. Most UNIXｪ systems can also send 
  306. data at these high speeds. If the system on the other end is a Macintosh, you 
  307. might suggest to the system's owner that they invest in a copy of SerialSpeed 
  308. to ensure that they are providing the maximum speed for their customers... 
  309.  
  310. Get a 33.6Kbps modem, or see if your modem manufacturer offers a 33.6Kbps upgrade 
  311. program. Practical Peripherals, Supra Corporation, and US Robotics offer these upgrades
  312. to their customers at a low cost. These modems are faster than 28.8Kbps modems
  313. in many cases, so they will provide better throughput with SerialSpeed 230.

  315. Consider new technology like ISDN Modems that can send and receive data 
  316. at 64Kbps or 128Kbps (and with compression, much higher!) One example is 
  317. the Motorola Bitsurfrｪ, available for US $400 or less at discount. ISDN offers 
  318. tremendous speed increases, and SerialSpeed 230 will help you get the most 
  319. from this technology.
